Most modern vehicles are equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS). While ABS isn't a part of your primary brake system, the ABS is a backup measure that helps you maintain steering ability and avoid skidding when you brake hard.   Since ABS prevents your wheels from locking up, you can steer your vehicle even while you brake. In turn, it could help you avoid an accident. The ABS engages according to what the sensor reads. A series of sensors measure wheel speed to catch if any of the wheels on your car is trying to lock up during braking. If a wheel is on the cusp of locking, a sequence of hydraulic valves decreases how much stopping force is applied to that particular wheel.
