5 Ways to Save Money on Fuel Despite the High Gas Prices

According to the EIA, gas prices have increased on average by 49% over the past year. While this increase is brutal for drivers to swallow, many of us still need our cars to get us from place to place. To mitigate the pain at the fuel pump, we've come up with some good practices to follow in the face of soaring price increases. Don't add drag to your vehicle - If you're not using the heavy tools, cargo boxes, or sporting equipment that are sitting in your car, it's best to get that junk out of your vehicle. Excess weight can create drag on your car, making your brakes, transmission, and your engine work harder. According to the Department of Energy, you may see anywhere between a 2-20% difference in your MPG by removing a large cargo box. Watch your speed - Speeding often results in negative consequences, right? Reducing your speed and taking it slow can also reduce the drag on your vehicle. What Is the Purpose of the ABS?

What Is the Purpose of the ABS?

Most modern vehicles are equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS). While ABS isn't a part of your primary brake system, the ABS is a backup measure that helps you maintain steering ability and avoid skidding when you brake hard.   Since ABS prevents your wheels from locking up, you can steer your vehicle even while you brake. In turn, it could help you avoid an accident. The ABS engages according to what the sensor reads. A series of sensors measure wheel speed to catch if any of the wheels on your car is trying to lock up during braking. If a wheel is on the cusp of locking, a sequence of hydraulic valves decreases how much stopping force is applied to that particular wheel. As a result, you can avoid skidding and keep control of your steering altogether. If you have anti-lock brakes and start to skid, you should press firmly on the brake and hold it in position. You will likely sense a pulsing feeling, which is normal.   When the ABS warn ... read more

What Causes Brake Rotors to Warp?

What Causes Brake Rotors to Warp?

As you may know, your brakes generate a lot of heat when carrying out the process to stop or slow your vehicle. Because of this excessive heat, the surface of brake rotors can become distorted with use. The rotors get glazed and deformed from the material of the brake pads. Other times, normal wear and tear can also cause the rotors to bend. This problem is commonly known as warping.  Can you drive with warped brake rotors?  While you can still operate your vehicle, it is not safe to drive with warped rotors. They run the risk of breaking, which could lead you to outright brake failure. The steering wheel can also be affected in some cases. You could risk losing complete control of the steering wheel on top of the ineffective brakes. Signs of warped brake rotors Some signs that indicate your brake rotors are warped include wobbly or shaky braking and loud squealing sounds. The shakiness symptom may not be as pronounced depending on the severity of the warping. However, m ... read more
